This prescient observation of Shakespeare over four centuries ago is seen today as everyday experience of common people. We open our newspapers and read about local, national and international events. We switch on the televisions and view / hear about events anywhere in the world, in real time and space. Common people are effortlessly exposed to each other through the media. Our everyday experiences these days are shaped by the technological revolution of the past five decades on the one hand, and the movement of the world economies towards globalization on the other. Globalization is an opportunity and not a cost. Today it is possible to see the entire world as a market place, and each country as a potential source for gaining competitive advantages. Economical local costs and talent make globalization an opportunity to be exploited in every field. Globalization of economies of the world permits each country to exploit its natural advantages and play its rightful part in global trade. In the popular culture field, while the Hollywood films in the English language could reach a section of the people around world at one time, we see them dubbed into local languages for the vast global audience today. MTV which started airing its original US programs in English was soon facing stiff competition from other music channels that offered a great deal of local content in the local language, and had to follow suit. Television channels, be they for children or for grown-ups, be they for city based audience or for small town / village viewers, are now routinely offering content in a multi-language platform and gaining larger viewership and therefore revenues through advertisements. Movies and film music based events from Mumbai are huge draws for the Indian immigrants in UK and the USA. Madam Tussauds wax museum in London has attracted twice the number of South Asian visitors this year as compared to a year ago, after it launched its wax model of the current Hindi film star ( Deccan Chronicle). In the eyes of some groups, globalization is not an undiluted blessing. With particular reference to popular culture, some fear that the dominant cultures exploit mass media to overrun others, and that this results in loss of diversity, independence of thought and promotes decadent life style. For example, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola brands invite as much accolades from the younger generation all over the world, as they incur the wrath of the environmental groups for the popularization of unhealthy food and drink habits; Feature articles from The Spectator, NYT or The Herald Tribune appear simultaneously in the Indian newspapers and shape public opinion; commentators like Tom Friedman or Rod Liddle are familiar names in English educated urban households; so also are the popular TV channels like BBC and CNN, much to the dislike of traditionalists. (History) Far before that in about 3400 B. C. the cultivation of the new age plague was being planted by the Mesopotamians which is known today as Opium. Present day, Afghanistan controls nearly 90% of all opium growth and distribution which is a $65 billion market. (Sites) Opium is a dried condescended form of poppy Juice which has a narcotic effect and if used in large doses it may be poisonous. Opium is most opularly found in Heroin, which is a street drug that was once used to sedate soldiers in war. Today Heroin controls the lives about 15 million addicted users worldwide, and in Afghanistan alone about 1 million users. This is due to the availability and cheap price of the drug throughout Afghanistan. (Sites). Just in the past three years Afghanistans poppy industry began resurfacing. And with Afghanistans ever increasing cultivation of the opiate producing poppy plant, we are seeing the effects of the cultivation and drug use getting worse. Thus making Afghanistan the biggest opium producer today. Addiction is a common thread for mankind everybody craves some form of something. Ranging from that cup of coffee you drink every morning to the television programs you watch at night, theres always a void that needs tending too. In Afghanistan however, the voids they face differ greatly from most Americans. Notoriously known for their rap sheet of wars the people of Afghanistan have been plagued by terrorism and the failure of their government for years. Creating a poverty ridden war traumatized environment for people to live in. Causing voids we as Americans so much take for granted such as income, clean water, and food. These everyday burdens have a heavy toll on the physical and mental well-being of many. Belittling them to succumb to the control of the pain killing derivatives of the poppy plant. Opium is no stranger to the afghan people, many users today have been addicted to the drug for years. l started to use the drug for pain relief after my husband died. says Mesoma, a 25 year old woman from Kabul, Afghanistan. (Cohen) That very response seems to be the common thread between addicts who try opium for the first time. It seems for a majority of users, opium helps them cope with something they lost. But why opium? And not a doctor prescribed drug? According to the World Health Organization or WHO Afghanistan has one of the worst health care systems worldwide. This is due to underfunding and neglect to their health care program, which has been an ongoing theme for years. (WHO). In saying that without the financial backing of the government for health care and the already struggling economy, many people dont have the money to treat their physical and mental illness. Which is when they turn to the cheap alternative heroin which is sold by the half gram for about $4 U. S. (Cohen) Ironically the same thing thats helping addicts ope with their problems is in turn causing them bigger problems in the end. A prime example is a 28 year old addict name Reza who was also a part of Anna o en CNN news report. Reza nad this to say using drugs made me leave my nome and my family, if I didnt use drugs I would have a family and a good life. Reza turned to drugs after a so called bad friend introduced him to heroin a year ago and hasnt stopped ever since. His last words for cameras were l would like to give up but at the moment I cant. (Cohen) Reza like many users has become so addicted to the potency of heroin that he no longer has control over the drug . With no money for food or the necessities to live addicts like Reza are beginning to flood the streets of major cities and abandoned buildings to find some type of shelter where they can shoot up and get high. As it stands it is estimated that one million or eight percent of Afghanistans population is addicted to opium. Lumahieu) And the thirty six percent increase of poppy cultivation could be to blame for this spike of users. And the worst is yet to come according to Gwen Lighter an author for the Moscow Times, she reports that after all foreign military forces depart in 2014 Opium will become the eading economic activity in Afghanistan. (Lighter). When this happens Afghanistans already struggling counter narcotics program will be under more scrutiny by farmers and Taliban and wi thout the backing of foreign forces. This may cause another potential rise in addicts due to the strengthen corruption within the Taliban and government. One potential solution thats got the world leaders stirring is the possibility of a Joined force operation of two countries such as Russia who has one of the worst Heroin addiction problems and the US to go in and defuse all turmoil appening in Afghanistan surrounding the Opium plague. (Lighter) The actuality of this actually happening is unknown. One thing we do know is as long theirs money to be had the opium will never stop flowing. Opium production in Afghanistan annually rakes in about $2 billion, which makes up about a tenth of Afghanistans economy. (Quraishi) What makes up Afghanistans rapidly growing opium production are farmers, the Taliban, and corrupt government officials. Afghanistans opium production first relies heavily on farmers. Before poppy, Afghanistan had their fair share of wheat farmers. But once they found out that poppy could make them 10 times more money than wheat could they began growing poppy. In 2012, there were about 200,000 farm families that grew 90 percent of all the worlds opium. Quaraishi) And with the rapid increase within the past year the number of farm families may have significantly risen. The average bottom of the business farmer makes about $2,500 which is still more than most Afghanistan families earn. Which is why many farmers are turning to the Taliban for help. In the documentary Opium brides they share stories of farmers who borrow money from rug lords to manifest thei r own poppy in hopes of earning money for their families. But when the government driven eradication programs come in to sweep out their crops they become in debt with the drug lords. When this happens and the farmers cannot pay back debts the Taliban begin kidnapping the farmers daughters to sell as brides for the Taliban. (Quraishi) Many farmers are outraged about the eradication because of the debts they will have to owe. Some farmers even believe that the same officials eradicating their crops are the ones splitting up seeds among themselves to sell. It is a harsh reality but farmers need to do what they have to, too survive. While, the poppy production funnels in $2 billion annually for the country. The rest of the $4 billion of the $6 billion industry is being put into the hands of the Taliban who control these grow ops and heavily tax and drive up opium prices tor buyers outside of the country. With this money the Taliban can continue to strengthen their forces and become an ever lingering problem within the Afghanistan community. Making them a more lethal threat too many including the US. The worse part about all of this s that the government is in on the whole thing, making the issue more difficult to fix. Based upon my investigation of the Opium problem in Afghanistan I see two trends that for see this industry to grow more than it already is. The two main reasons for this go back to the backbone of what makes up this business, the money and the addicts. The demand of Opium throughout the world will never stop growing for the simple reason of addiction. Once addicts begin using its a known trend throughout my investigation that is extremely hard to shake. With that said the demand will forever stay high. Making for virtually a never ending need of opium. Meanwhile suppliers or Afghanistan at this rate cant stop because they got the bitter sweet taste of income. Which feeds not only the corrupt but the country as a whole. They would be looking at a 10 percent decrease of national income to their which would be a terrible blow to an already struggling economy. Which brings me to the conclusion that this problem will forever linger throughout the existence of Afghanistan. RP is also known in another term such as layer manufacturing, direct CAD manufacturing, solid freeform fabrication and rapid prototyping and manufacturing (RPM). From these several terms for RP it can be drawn that its basic principle is actually â€Å"additive manufacturing.† It is because the 3D object is being formed by building layer by layer through adding, depositing or solidifying one or more materials in a horizontal layer-wise process (Heynick and Stotz, 2006). Lam et al (2002) described the rapid prototyping (RP) as â€Å"the process of creating three dimensional (3D) objects through repetitive deposition and processing of material layers using computer-controlled equipment †¦ based on the 2D cross-sectional data obtained from slicing a computer-aided design (CAD) model,† (49). ...   The whole model is completed by printing successive 2D profiles on a fresh layer of powder. The profiles of each layer are joined using the printed binder and completed after the removal of the unbound powder and this has been used extensively for the fabrication of drug delivery devices (Wu et al, 1996). Tissue engineers soon caught up and started using 3DP to design and fabricate scaffolds (Wu et al, 1996). Developments include the use of the technology combined with salt leaching technique to fabricate polymeric scaffolds using copolymers of polylactide-coglycolide (PLGA, 85L:15G) and a suitable solvent. Cylindrical scaffolds (F O 8X7 mm) and managed to achieve interconnected porous channels of about 800 ?m and microporosities of 45–150 ?m by using salt leaching. They were able to attach large numbers of hepatocytes on the scaffolds. In a study that investigated cellular reactions to pore size and void fractions based on 3DP fabricated scaffolds, cell proliferation was observed on the scaffolds but varied between cell types and the experimental parameters. The scaffolds used in the experiment had varying pore sizes of 38–150 ?m and void fractions 75% and 90% (Zeltinger et al, 2001). RP is far different from traditional fabrication because this technology is only possible through the aid of the computer which controls all the mechanical system in fabricating 3D objects. Traditional fabrication technique could include solvent casting, gas foaming, fiber bonding/ meshes, phase separation, melt molding, emulsion freeze drying, solution casting, and freeze drying.

Female Genital Mutilation in Africa ital Mutilation in Sudan In the country of Sudan, in Northern Africa, there is a procedure that is tradition and is performed on most women called female genital mutilation, or FGM, which used to be known as female circumcision. It has been a normal practice for generations, but is now the subject for international controversy on the morality and safety of this procedure. It is now known that 82 percent of Sudanese woman have an extreme form of genital mutilation done on them, normally at a young age. This form of mutilation is called the Pharaonic form and includes the total removal of the clitoris and labia, and stitching together of the vulva, leaving only a small hole for urination and menstrual cycle. This is normally done without any type of anaesthetic or professional medical care. There is also a more moderate form of mutilation, called Sunni, where only the covering of the clitoris is removed. This practice started and became tradition in foreign countries in order to ensure that women practice chaste behavior, and to suppress female sexuality. It has also been attributed to religious beliefs of monogamy although most religions do not support this type of practice. In today's society it has become more of a traditional and social norm, and has less to do with religious beliefs. This problem is not only in Sudan; it is practiced in the majority of the continent of Africa as well as other coun tries. In other cultures, such as Australian aborigines, genital mutilation is a part of the rite of passage into maturation, and is done on both men and women (Bodley, p. 58). FGM has often been referred to as female circumcision and compared to male circumcision. However, such comparison is often misleading. Both practices include the removal of well- functioning parts of the genitalia and are quite unnecessary. However, FGM is far more drastic and damaging than male circumcision because it is extremely dangerous and painful. It is believed that two thirds of these procedures are done by untrained birth attendants, who have little knowledge of health. They are often unconcerned with hygiene, and many use instruments that are not cleaned or disinfected properly. Instruments such as razor blades, scissors, kitchen knives, and pieces of glass are commonly used. Andrew Carnegie A man of Scotland, a distinguished citizen of the United States, and a philanthropist devoted to the betterment of the world around him, Andrew Carnegie became famous at the turn of the twentieth century and became a real life rags to riches story. Born in Dunfermline, Scotland, on November 25, 1835, Andrew Carnegie entered the world in poverty. The son of a hand weaver, Carnegie received his only formal education during the short time between his birth and his move to the United States. When steam machinery for weaving came into use, Carnegie?s father sold his looms and household goods, sailing to America with his wife and two sons. At this time, Andrew was twelve, and his brother, Thomas, was five. Arriving into New York on August 14, 1848, aboard the Wiscasset from Glasgow, the Carnegies wasted little time settling in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh, where relatives already existed and were there to provide help. Allegheny City provided Carnegie?s first job, as a bobbin boy in a cotton factory, working for $1.20 a week. His father also worked there while his mother bound shoes at home, making a miniscule amount of money. Although the Carnegies lacked in money, they abounded in ideals and training for the ir children. At age 15, Carnegie became a telegraph messenger boy in Pittsburgh. He learned to send and decipher telegraphic messages and became a telegraph operator at the age of 17. Carnegie?s next job was as a railroad clerk, working for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He worked his way up the ladder, through his dedication and honest desire to succeed, to become train dispatcher and then division manager. At this time, young Carnegie, age 24, had already made some small investments that laid the foundations of his what would be tremendous fortune. One of these investments was the purchase of stock in the Woodruff Sleeping Car Company. In 1864, Carnegie entered the iron business, but did not begin to make steel until years later. In 1873, he built the Edgar Thomson works in Braddock, Pennsylvania, to make Bessemer steel. He established many other steel plants, and in 1892, he merged all of his interests into the Carnegie Steel Company. This act from Carnegie is fitting with one of his most famous quotations, ?Put all of your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket.? This firm became one of the greatest industrial enterprises in America. Carnegie later sold it to J.P. Morgan?s United States Steel Corporation in 1901 for $400 million, which would be a little over $4 billion today! After retiring, Carnegie?s fortune was estimated to be as large as half a billion dollars. From that time on, with the philosophy that the rich have a moral obligation to give away their money, he devoted himself to philanthropy. Although ironic, this man of great fortune strongly believed in the merits of poverty for the development of character and work ethic, and determined that wealthy men should not leave their fortunes to their children, but should give it away, claiming ?The man who dies thus rich, dies disgraced.? The picture of community service, Carnegie is quoted as saying, ?Pittsburgh entered the core of my heart when I was a boy, and cannot be torn out.
